ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND:
Founded in 1873, the Niizawa Sake Brewery has always been family-run and family-owned. The current President is the 5th generation President of the brewery. The original brewery was destroyed in the 2011 earthquake and the current brewery was constructed later the same year in Kawasaki, Miyagi on the grounds of a previously unoccupied brewery. Niizawa Sake Brewery is dedicated to continuously improving the quality of its sake and is constantly researching and developing new technologies to produce a high-quality product. Most of the staff is quite young and it is 50% female. The brewery subscribes to the philosophy that anyone is capable of brewing sake regardless of age and gender. Moreover, several employees are drawn from outside of Miyagi Prefecture, which is unusual for a sake brewery. PiA’s first Niizawa Fellow, the class of 2022, was involved in every aspect of sake production, from brewing to shipping.
ABOUT THE POSITION:
The position will involve every aspect of sake production, from brewing to shipping. The priority is to continuously improve the quality of the sake produced at the brewery. Much of the work is physical.
